How to make a self-care box

Self care box wrapped up

I have a self-care box and I've made them for my best friends too, I find them super helpful in the times of need and my friends loved them so I thought I would write a short blog on how to make one!

What is a self-care box? So you may have heard about a self-care box and now you're wondering what it is. It is simply, a box of goodies which make you feel good.

Why should somebody have a self-care box?

Imagine a box filled with your favourite things. Now imagine being upset over something. Do you think you think a box filled with your favourite things would help at that moment?

A self-care box can work as your emergency contact when things go badly, you can turn to it to help you feel better.

Now that you have had a quick rundown on what and why you should have a self-care box, I'm going to tell you some ideas on what to include!

When making your self-care box, you should focus on your senses - touch, taste, sight, smell and sound. When you are feeling down, focusing on your senses in that moment help calm you down and help "bring you back down to earth", that's why they are important for your box!

Include something that you enjoy to touch, it doesn't need to be anything fancy or meaningful, it can literally be anything at all.

Here are some examples:

  • Teddy bear

  • Silk pyjamas

  • Soft blanket

  • Velvet material

  • Something embroidered

Include something you love to eat! Of course, this one will need to be re-stocked every now and again unless your favourite food is tinned tuna, which is okay to include too!

Here are some examples:

  • Brownie mix

  • Chocolate

  • Coffee

  • Sour lollies

  • Chips

This one is one of the easiest, include something you enjoy looking at. This could be so many different things, it could even be something you look at and play.

Here are some examples:

  • Your favourite movie

  • Pictures of friends and family

  • Colouring in book

  • Games

  • Birthday cards

  • Inspirational quotes

  • Your favourite book

I love certain smells and some smells even remind me of a happy time!

Here are some examples:

  • Scented candles

  • Essential oils

  • Perfume

  • Vanilla pod

  • Coffee beans

Include some of your favourite sounds, it doesn't need to be music but it can be if you like! Here are some examples:

  • An iPod

  • An instrument

  • A bell

  • A whistle

  • A seashell

Now imagine, you have all of the above in one box when you are upset. I'm sure your mood will improve once you light your candles, eat your delicious food and watch your favourite movie!

Don't forget that you can make a box for your friend too if you don't know their favourite things, that's okay - just include what you think they'd enjoy.
